What is a Power of Attorney?
Financial and Medical Powers of Attorney are important estate planning documents that allow a person (the “principal”), to name people (“agents”) who can step in to make decisions for the principal or manage simple daily tasks, when he or she is unable to do so.
A Financial Power of Attorney gives the agent the authority to carry out common tasks, such as paying bills, writing checks, signing agreements, and otherwise managing your common financial affairs.
A Medical Power of Attorney, also known as an Advanced Health Care Directive, allows the principal to name an agent to make decisions in medical emergencies, when the principal may not be able to do so. It also allows the principal to articulate personal healthcare wishes and ensures that these wishes will be carried out.
Does my child need a Power of Attorney?
Yes! For young adults, a Power of Attorney is an important documents that are often overlooked due to age in relation to minority. It’s not commonly known that when a person reaches the age of 18, parents and family members no longer have the same rights and abilities to step in and assist when the need arises.
