While many cities across California increase their minimum wage requirements on January 1 of each year, there are several cities that do not implement the minimum wage increase until July 1. (We previously wrote about the January 1 minimum wage increase.) If you have not already checked, Employers should confirm their local city ordinances relating to minimum wage hikes to ensure you are paying your employees accurately. These changes must be put in writing to your employees, the increased payment must be begin on July 1, 2021 and properly reflected on their paycheck.
In addition to the increased minimum wage, each business must post the relevant poster for their city. For example, if you are in San Francisco, the minimum wage beginning July 1, 2021 increases to $16.32. This San Francisco Minimum Wage poster must be placed in a commonly viewed area in the workplace, such as the kitchen or break room. Other cities increasing their minimum wage requirements on July 1 include Berkeley ($16.32), Emeryville ($17.13) and Los Angeles ($15).
Don’t forget this also impacts salary requirements to qualify for exemption of some otherwise qualified employees. For more information on how to implement these minimum wage increases, proper notices and to ensure your exempt employees don’t lose their exempt status, please contact the Employer Lawyers at Chauvel & Glatt.
